Acrylic paints are a popular alternative to oil paints. However, they do have different properties. These can be seen as either positive or negative from the perspective of the artist.
It depends on the preference whilst painting. While oil paints are made from pigment and oil, acrylics are made from pigment suspended in water and binded with resin. They really are great to work with, and you can get some fantastic results.
As they're water - based, they can be mixed with water, and brushes need to be cleaned with water as opposed to turps. It is possible to add other mediums to give different effects. Glazing mediums make the paint more transparent and thin. Impasto mediums make the paint more bulky which enables it to be put on thickly.
This is ideal when painting seascapes or landscapes. With seascapes it is fun to use impasto gel because of the effect it can have on the movement of the sea. With landscapes, the thickness can portray foliage on trees or grass in the fields, etc.
Whereas oil paints take a long time to dry, acrylics dry very quickly. This means that there is not much time to get something looking how you want it to. With oil, if something does not look right, it is easy to scrape off the paint and start again. With acrylic this is not possible, but the advantage is that another layer of paint can be used over the first without that layer showing through.
This can effectively mask any errors. It also means that any colour from underneath does not mix with the new colour thereby ruining your work. With oil, the colours would blend together as they would still be wet. A medium called a retarder helps to make the paint dry slower.
This can be handy when the intention is to put on a thick layer of paint, and to enable it to be applied easily. Many landscape artists do, however, enjoy working with oil. It's possible to paint acrylics on many surfaces including canvas, paper and board. Acrylics are very versatile and come in a wide range of colours, either in tubes or pots.
